Beyond an imaging center...
Our philosophy
The AIC is more than just an imaging center offering open access to cutting-edge microscopes. Deep in our DNA is the unwavering conviction that technology dissemination cannot really be considered successful if it does not also benefit scientists in resource-constrained communities. The AIC has led many microscopy training and capacity-strengthening programs across the globe. Below are some of the highlights.
Microscopy training in resource-limited areas
The educational outreach programs of the AIC are second to none. We have championed the idea of all-expense-paid workshops that can be efficiently deployed to areas with constrained resources. More importantly, we turn these workshops into parallel opportunities to train the local trainers so that our unique training curriculum can be further propagated. So far, we have offered such workshops in Africa, Latin America, Europe. Upcoming courses have been planned for Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
Strengthening microscopy capacity in Africa
The AIC spearheaded the Africa Microscopy Initiative - an ambitious, multi-pronged strategy to bolster microscopy expertise and capacity for the African scientific community. The initiative is currently funded by the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
