Imaging Puerto Rico

An All-expenses-paid Microscopy and Image Analysis Workshop
for Caribbean Researchers

Location: Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, San Juan

Course Dates: January 28 - February 02, 2024

Application Deadline: October 11, 2023

This 6-day workshop is offered by the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust in San Juan in partnership with the Advanced Imaging Center at HHMI - Janelia Research Campus.

With an emphasis on hypothesis-driven experimental design tailored for the regional research interests, students will learn how to properly devise and execute microscopy experiments to quantitively test complex biological questions.

The expenses of Imaging Puerto Rico are entirely covered for all attendees.

Extensive hands-on microscopy practicals across a variety of imaging platforms

This workshop will cover the following:

  • Microscopy

    • Introduction to optics

    • Brightfield microscopy

    • Phase-contrast microscopy

    • Widefield fluorescence microscopy

    • Confocal fluorescence microscopy

    • Enhanced resolution microscopy (Airyscan)

    • Survey of emerging advanced technologies

  • Image Processing

    • Fundamentals of digital images

    • Basic principles of image processing

    • Fourier transformations

    • Object segmentation

    • Machine learning

  • Quantitative Analysis

    • Colocalization

    • Ratiometric image analysis

    • Intensity and morphometric measurements

    • Motion tracking and modeling

Image processing and analysis training for quantitative fluorescence microscopy

Students will not only learn the tools and skills necessary to perform a suite of quantitative analyses, but also the importance of imaging ethics and proper reporting to ensure reproducibility.
